Stratford
A booming East London area located 7 miles (approx. 11km) north-east of central London, Stratford went global as the location for the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
1,000 years ago, Stratford was a vast farming area close to the River Lea. It was supplying London with agricultural goods well up until middle of the 19th century. In mid 1700s, manufacturing moved into the district which changed with new infrastructure including extensive rail transport facilities. By 1860’s a new town was formed with over 20,000 people living and servicing the manufacturing in the area. There were mills, distilleries, breweries, engineering workshops, printers, and plants processing coal, oil, manure and animal bones.
The railway works closure in 1990’s brought unemployment and decline to Stratford. What kickstarted the thorough regeneration was the decision to give Stratford the role of the main host for the Summer Olympic Games 2012.
Stratford is part of the Lower Lee Valley Opportunity area spanning the boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Newham, and includes Stratford, Bromley-by-Bow, Poplar and Leamouth.
In the last decade, Stratford has emerged as a major commercial, retail, education and employment East London hub perfectly positioned for both finance centres: the City of London and Canary Wharf. The infrastructure investments in Stratford resulted in its superb connectivity with the rest of London and the country. As a result, the area is one of the most dynamic parts of London delivering multiple, new homes housing projects attracting investors from the UK and abroad.
