Battersea Power Station Opening
Battersea Power Station Opening 14 October 2022
The iconic Battersea Power Station building, part of a large development on the south bank of the River Thames, will open its doors to the public on Friday 14 October 2022. The £9bn restoration, repurposing and redevelopment led by Wilkinson Eyre architects, took almost a decade to complete. To celebrate the opening of the building and the new Electric Boulevard, there is a five-day public ‘Festival of Power’ programme.
Battersea Power Station, a Grade II listed Art Deco building, was designed by architect Giles Gilbert Scott and built in two stages: Battersea A completed in 1933 and Battersea B opening in 1955.
The Festival of Power:
To celebrate the opening of Battersea Power Station, there’s an entertainment programme that runs for two weekends: Friday 14 to Sunday 16 October, and Saturday 22 October to Sunday 23 October 2022.
Highlights include a free heritage trail, live performances and entertainment, artisan pop-up food eateries, and an evening with three consecutive live light shows.
The celebrations start on Friday 14 October at 10am in Malaysia Square, below the south chimneys, with a countdown marking the opening of the Station.
The much-anticipated light show, ‘Lords of Lightning’ by Arcadia will be performed on Friday 14 October at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm in the six-acre Power Station Park, below the north chimneys.
The heritage trail is an opportunity to see the 10-year transformation inside and outside the Grade II listed power station building. More details on the past 40 years of the Battersea Power Station history are available in the Power of Place Exhibition, currently located on the ground floor of the North Atrium. The building’s role in powering London could be explored further in the Heritage and Learning Hub which features a historic model of the Power Station.
Further live entertainment programme includes the Setia Harmony Drummers performing in the Turbine Hall A, the Battersea Power Station Community Choir made of 100 local people, and several acts taking over the Pavilion Stage in the Power Station Park.
The building is also home to a range of brands offering a unique, ‘one-of-a-kind concept store’ shopping experience. There will be a great selection of food pop-up trucks and stores throughout the Battersea Power Station site.
Accessing Lift 109 will provide a unique journey and a 360-degree view from the top of one of the building’s striking chimneys. The pre-booked journey starts in the Turbine Hall with an exhibition throwing more details about the building’s heritage ‘its architectural significance and enduring presence in popular culture.’
A new pedestrianised high street, Electric Boulevard, will also open from 14 October, and will be one of the main gateways from the 1 Battersea Power Station Underground to the Power Station.
