Silvertown, Royal Docks, London E16 - Area
Royal Docks has an impressive industrial history spanning over 100 years from mid-19 century. Crucial for the progress of London’s commerce and trade, the docks grew fast and large anchoring cargo and passenger ships at three ports: Victoria Dock, Royal Albert Dock and King George V Dock. The growth of supporting services and industries followed, with the docks employing substantial workforce which was subsequently housed in the nearby riverside area. This world’s largest enclosed dock system started declining from 1960s and closed in 1981.
Today, Royal Docks is an area of extensive regeneration and transformation from industrial to a predominantly residential district offering a combination of modern housing, new working opportunities and attractive outdoors close to the Thames. New residents and businesses are now based in a variety of contemporary, mixed-use river and dockside developments.
Royals Docks is home to The University of East London, London City Airport, The Crystal events venue, ExCel- international expo centre, Brick Lane Music Hall, Thames Barrier Park, Lyle Park, Emirates Air Line, and the future Royal Docks Enterprise zone.
