Serpentine Pavilion 2019
Designed by the Japanese architect Junya Ishigami, this year’s Serpentine Pavilion design opens on 21 June. This is the 19th edition of this prominent temporary architecture event taking place on the Serpentine Gallery’s lawn in Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park, central London. This years’ design is made by ‘arranging slates to create a single canopy roof that appears to emerge from the ground of the surrounding park. Within, the interior of the Pavilion is an enclosed cave-like space, a refuge for contemplation’.
Serpentine Pavilion commissions began in 2000 with Zaha Hadid followed by the biggest names in international architecture. from Frida Escobedo of Mexico to Francis Kéré of Burkina Faso and Bjarke Ingels of Denmark. Junya Ishigami shot to fame after becoming the youngest recipient of the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize for his glass-walled KAIT studio. In 2010 he won the Golden Lion for best project at the Venice Architecture Biennale. The Serpentine Pavilion structure will stay open and free to visit until 6 October.
