Vauxhall
Vauxhall is a sprawling central London residential area on the south bank of the Thames, across the river from Pimlico via Vauxhall Bridge. Its Underground and National Rail travel interchange, with a modern bus station, is a gateway to a variety of distinctive pocket neighbourhoods patched up together into a diverse and dynamic urban scape that is todays’ Vauxhall.
Vauxhall forms part of central London’s largest regeneration project which is transforming some 560 acres of former office and industrial land. New homes, schools and transport links are brought to the area with a regeneration that started almost three decades ago with the new MI6 headquarters built at Vauxhall Cross on Albert Embankment. Most recently, it was the decision in 2007 to relocate the Mayfair USA Embassy to new quarters in the adjacent Nine Elms district (opened in 2018) that gave the area an upgrade followed by new investments. St George Wharf with the tower is the first landmark riverside development built on the land next to the station. The modern high rise development blocks take the centre stage along the prime riverbank area east and west of the bridge. The most dramatic transformation has taken place along Albert Embankment, a narrow and long site leading to the historic Lambeth Palace. Recently completed towers there provide a variety of luxury apartments with onsite fitness facilities and improved local amenities. This neighbourhood overlooks the Thames, Pimlico and Houses of Parliament, and has been branded a prime central London riverside location. At the rear of the imposing, modern buildings are much older and well-established Victorian terraced and contemporary post-war neighbourhoods of Vauxhall.
Vauxhall remained a village throughout 18th century, but was split into sections by the progress of various streets facilitating the increased traffic from Lambeth to Westminster. Vauxhall Bridge was opened in 1816 and Vauxhall Bridge Road built in the same year. The district has two superb open green spaces: Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens dating back from mid-17th century for hosting cultural and community events, and the younger Vauxhall Park with tennis courts and a model village, which opened in July 1890.
