Oval Village is a large urban regeneration project and a mixed-use redevelopment of a former industrial site in Kennington, south of Thames. The project is set in Central London Travel Zone 1, between Oval, Vauxhall and Kennington stations. The City, West End and the Thames are within 30 minutes’ walking distance of Oval Village.

 

The Oval Village site masterplan incorporates six distinctive residential schemes with a collection of over 1,300 luxury homes as well as varied office, commercial, community and private and public open spaces. It occupies the location of the historic Oval Gasworks plant. Four Victorian gasholders from the original complex have been part of the south London landscape and the nearby Oval Cricket Stadium since the late 1800s. The Gasholder Number One, the tallest of all four at 135 feet is a Grade II listed structure and will be the centerpiece of the new Oval Village. After restoration, the gasholder’s frame will be anchored back in place encasing a building with high-specification apartments.  

 

The site comprises inner courtyards and generous communal green spaces designed with ‘low-level shrubs, feature trees, and a water feature referencing the site’s heritage. In the heart of the Oval Village and defined by a gasholder’s steel frame remnants is Gasholder Plaza. Lavishly planted and with waterfalls, ponds, and bridges, the piazza is overlooked by cafes and shops and extends to another open green space called Phoenix Circus.

 

Berkeley Homes is the developer of new homes at Oval Village. The team involved in this large project launched in 2019 includes GRID Architects, Formation Architects and Rolfe Judd Architects.

Each block has a unique form reflecting its location within the development and relationship to neighbouring buildings.”

 

Oval Works, a seven-storey 77,000 sq ft office building with a roof terrace, is an internal part of the site with a workspace accommodating 750 people.

 

Oval Village apartments and facilities

Oval Village complex has a large selection of modern, multi-aspect studios, 1, 2 & 3-bedroom apartments varying in size and with access to residential facilities.

 

Phoenix Court is the first Oval Village residential building completed in 2023 and 2024.

An 18-storey tower and the luxury Serenity apartments are both part of The Pinnacle Collection.

Location and transport

Oval Village has a well-connected, versatile and vibrant Central London location in the Borough of Lambeth. There are three London Underground stations nearby, and The Thames Path, the City and the West End are within 30 minutes’ walking distance of the Village.

 

Kennington Station (Zone 1) and Oval Station (Zone 2) are serviced by Northern Line trains, while Vauxhall (Zone 1) has access to Victoria Line and the National Rail services. Oxford Circus is an eight-minute Tube journey from Vauxhall. City of London is a nine-minute journey from Oval.

 

Vauxhall Bus Station is a major transport hub with over 13 bus stands for travel across various parts of London.  

 

Vauxhall Pier (St George Wharf) is located a stroll from the train station and serves riverboats along the Thames calling at Putney, Battersea Power Station, London Bridge, Canary Wharf, Greenwich and Barking Riverside.

 

Lambeth Borough runs a low-traffic neighbourhood helping improve mobility for local cyclists and pedestrians. London’s Cycle Superhighway, CS7, runs via Oval Cricket Ground and Kennington Station to Elephant and Castle and on to Cannon Street and the City of London.

 

Oval is internationally known for Oval Cricket Stadium, which has been home to the historic Surrey Country Cricket Club since 1845. There is also Lambeth Palace, the official residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury overlooking the Thames – one of the 10 best historical buildings in London. Other landmarks include the Garden Museum, Vauxhall Cross (former MI6), and Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens.

 

Some of the Borough’s best parks (Lambeth has over 60 parks) are close to the Oval Village including Kennington Park, Vauxhall Park and Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens.

 

Oval Village is within easy reach of the amenities along Kennington Road. There are cafes, pubs, delis and local flower markets. The Kennington Triangle is home to an array of art and entertainment venues and organisations including Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery, Cabinet Gallery, Gasworks, The Camera Club, and The City & Guilds London School of Art.
