Marylebone Square, London W1 – Overview
Marylebone Square is a new city scheme with over 70 high-end one, two and three bedroom apartments, commercial and community space and public car parking in the basement. It is set in a contemporary, mansion type development which embraces the Marylebone Village neighbourhood’s character and compliments the local classical architecture too. After five decades of failed proposals for this long abandoned prime Marylebone Village site, the Marylebone Square team’s building project received a seal of approval from Westminster Council.
Contemporary Georgian is how Simon Bowden the architect defines the development’s design. The cladding uses glazed ceramics and distinctive cast metal balustrades produced by a local foundry. “The signature feature is an intricate lantern frieze that runs along the edge of the terraced penthouses”.
The entrance into the building is designed with a large canopy emulating the elegance and grandeur of some classy central London hotels. Once inside, the cavernous, five level, central courtyard featuring a 24hr concierge desk clad in York stone is revealed. This inner space is designed to impress and clam. Offering access to all the apartments, the courtyard will also serve as an open garden sanctuary flooded with light from a large glass canopy, filled with lush plants and delicate trees overlooking a large pond set in the middle.
Marylebone area
An attractive, well established village area along the charming Marylebone Lane dotted with artisan coffee shops, hip wine, cheese and pastry parlours, and French style dining establishments. At the top of the street is St. Marylebone Parish Church, a Grade I listed Neoclassical building by Thomas Hardwick, a landmark and gateway to the beautiful Regent’s Park. A great sense of community still prevails in Marylebone which runs regular public events such as Marylebone Food Festival, Summer street festival and the fantastic Village Christmas lights event which takes place mid-November each year. Marylebone has a mixture of Georgian terraces, Victorian mansion blocks and Art Deco-style architecture. The area is home to the Wallace Collection, Wigmore Hall and the Royal Academy of Music.
