King's Cross London area

King's Cross

King's Cross is London’s hottest new neighbourhood east of Regent’s Park and north of Bloomsbury.

The area is mentioned as the location of the battle between Queen Boudicca and the Roman invaders and there is a belief that the queen’s final resting place is under Platform 9 at King’s Cross station. The missionary monks built a church in the areas in AD 597 dedicated to the relics of the martyr saint St Pancras in AD 597. The site is known as one of the oldest places of Christian worship in Europe. Up until late 18th century King’s Cross was predominantly rural with routes leading out or London to the north. The new Victorian industrial age for the neighbourhood started with the completion of the Regent’s Canal in 1820, which brought in many manufacturers and small businesses supporting the development of the Great Northern Railway terminus nearby. The 20th century saw the decline of King’s Cross as many residents lost work opportunities linked to diminished local businesses.

The Channel Tunnel construction work, which started in 2001, was followed by the restoration and extension of St. Pancras Station and investments into new residential homes, educational and entrepreneurial developments such as Kings Place, the Francis Crick Institute and Central Saint Martins School of art.   Granary Square, Coal Drops Yard, Canopy Market & Waitrose, Kerb Market, Camley Street park, House of Illustration are among a wide choice of places to visit, have food, drinks or enjoy outdoor entertainment. The list is endless.

‘Paris is always a good idea’ – especially when you have the Eurostar on your doorstep! King's Cross St. Pancras allows quick and easy access to the continent (Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Bruges, Lille) with Eurostar journeys taking 2 hours 6 minutes to Paris and 2 hours 1 minute to Brussels.

If you enjoy getting a good read then The British Library has over 170 million different items and is definitely the place for you with an endless selection of journals, books, online galleries. You can also take a stroll down Regent’s Canal to  Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill.
