Camberwell
Charming, young, arty and creative – Camberwell is a flourishing South London district neighbouring Peckham, Walworth and Elephant & Castle, Herne Hill, Dulwich, and Brixton.
Set in travel zone 2, in the borough of Southwark, the area is home to Kings College Hospital, Camberwell College of Art (UAL), the South London Art gallery and the popular summer event, the Camberwell Art Festival. Its beating heart is Camberwell Green and its lungs are sprouting open green spaces of Burgess Park, Ruskin Park, Myatt’s Fields, Lucas Gardens, Brunswick Park and the private Lettsom Gardens.
Some say that two different worlds exist in Camberwell: one almost rural along charming streets lined with Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the other contemporary and stark within pockets of 20th century housing estate blocks. In addition to that, and what has been attracting London homes buyers in the recent years, are new contemporary homes in often boutique developments such as Camberwell on the Green, Wing of Camberwell or Elmington Green.
Camberwell Green has a remarkable variety of shops, cafes and restaurants, and on Saturdays it is part of a lively village setting for a well-established Farmers & Artisan Market. The nearby Camberwell Green Leisure Centre has two swimming pools, exercise studios and a state-of-the-art gym. This landmark Victorian building with dates to 1891 and originally served public baths and wash houses for the local community.
The future of Camberwell: In March 2020, £1.5m investment by the GLA’s Good Growth Fund has been awarded to Southwark Council towards new projects within the Camberwell area plan. ‘The funding will be used to make improvements to three key areas identified by local people: (1) better connections between Denmark Hill station and the hospitals and town centre, (2) help to open more space at Camberwell College of Arts to local people, and (3) improve the landscaping on Camberwell Station Rd and support ArchCo’s plans to open up empty arches to businesses.’ ‘These improvements will encourage more cycling and walking, help tackle air pollution and unlock new opportunities for new housing, workspace and improving public space in the area.’
