WESTMINSTER

Westminster is London’s super prime central residential area adjacent to St James’s Park, Belgravia, Pimlico and with direct access to River Thames. It forms part of the City of Westminster and has the prestigious SW1 postcode. Home to the Houses of Parliament and located nearby Buckingham Palace,  Westminster is well known as the beating heart of London’s political and ceremonial life and is today, one of the most prestigious locations to live.

Westminster became the UK’s seat of political power in 1295 - the year of the first official gathering of the Parliament of England. In terms of housing and its urban development, swathes of Westminster land covered with slums dominated the landscape up until the late 1800s. The first half of 19th century saw a major infrastructure investment and the subsequent gentrification, both linked to the construction of Victoria Station in 1860-62.

Today, a new, large investment programme is underway driving regeneration of areas adjacent to Victoria station and Victoria Street. The project took off in 2010 with plans for more than three million sq.ft. of new retail, office and residential space. The Victoria Business Improvement District organisation is promoting this section of Westminster ‘as a new major business destination outside the West End’.  Once known as ‘civil servants’ district, the area is changing fast to a residential hot-spot with a fantastic range of luxury, mixed-use developments.

Westminster is home to a wide range of superb period and contemporary architecture: from the exquisitely Gothic Westminster Abby, town houses and properties dating back to 1700s (Park Street and Queen Square), the Byzantine styled Westminster Cathedral, to several, recently completed new homes developments such as Nova Building.

Cardinal Place and Victoria Place are two main retail and office centres. The next phase in the transformation of the area is the radical overhaul of Victoria Station, the main transport hub which provides access to Underground (Victoria, Circle, District line) and Rail services and handles 195 million people each year.

Victoria Street, Horseferry Road and Vauxhall Bridge Road are the main thoroughfares linking the district with other areas of the Capital.
