WEST END
The West End is an area of Central and West London north of the River Thames and west of the City of London. It sits at the heart of the borough of Westminster and is home to many cultural institutions, tourist attractions and retail businesses. Historically, the area grew with the population moving out of the City of London, especially after the Great Fire of London 1666. Gradually, new palaces and large houses emerged in Covent Garden, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square. Neighbouring the West End are Mayfair, St James, Belgravia and Knightsbridge.
Today, the West End is the Capital’s beating heart, a world class cultural centre, home to a historic theatre district and a luxury shopping destination. The most popular streets in the West End are Oxford Street, Regent Street, and Bond Street.
The West End boasts some of the best loved central London public squares such as Covent Garden market's public realm flanked by the magnificent Royal Opera House, Leicester Square’s fountain plateau overlooked by the National Portrait Gallery, or the vibrant Piccadilly Circus which leads to some of the most visited West End streets such as Regent Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Coventry Street and Haymarket.
