Southbank Place, SE1
Southbank Place is a large mixed-use central London development featuring seven new buildings located on the south banks of the Thames, between the river and Waterloo station. It incorporates the iconic 1960’s Shell HQ building, overlooks Jubilee Gardens and the London Eye, and is bordered by Belvedere Road and York Road. Developed by Braeburn Estates Limited Partnership (a joint venture partnership between Qatari Diar and Canary Wharf Group), the master plan was by Squire and Partners working alongside Kohn Pederson Fox, Squire & Partners, Patel Taylor, Stanton Williams, GRID and Townshend Landscape.
Southbank Space delivers a mix of new offices, private and affordable homes, retail and public open space and contributes to the updates of the existing public realm. The 5.25 acre site will provide 48,000 sq ft of shops, restaurants and bars, plus 530,000 sq ft of office space. Planed as a new destination on the vibrant South Bank, the architecture pays homage to the history and heritage of the area which was home for The Festival of Britain exhibition of 1951. A square and surrounding buildings have been named after Sir Hugh Casson, a British architect and former director of the South Bank’s Festival of Britain.
