WOOLWICH AND ROYAL ARSENAL RIVERSIDE, SE18
Woolwich is a historic London district with rich heritage and distinctive character acquired from many Grade I and II listed buildings and its riverside setting. Positioned along the south banks of the Thames and overlooking Docklands to the north, Woolwich is a town within the prosperous Royal Borough of Greenwich.
With the old town in its heart, Woolwich is recognized in The London Plan as one of several development opportunity areas with tremendous growth potentials. The recent transport infrastructure investments in Woolwich include DLR and Elizabeth Line / Crossrail, which is started services in 2022 from the Royal Arsenal. Crossrail provides fast connections to Canary Wharf, Central London and Heathrow..
The recent regeneration of Woolwich includes the repair, enhancement and redesign of its town centre, extension of its public realm, transformation of several estates, building of a new leisure centre, investment in Woolwich Works (a new creative quarter), and improved accessibility to both the riverside and the surrounding residential areas.
In October 2018 planning permission was granted for the first phase of a multi-million-pound restoration of historic buildings forming part of a 15,000sqm complex referred to as Woolwich Works (Woolwich Creative District). Run by Woolwich Creative District Trust, Woolwich Works will be home to a 450-seat theatre, a music venue, a museum and rehearsal studios. The project has been awarded the prestigious RIBA London Award 2023, and RIBA London Conservation Award 2023.
New homes and new mixed-use residential-led developments at Woolwich are located closer to the river front. The largest development is the Royal Arsenal Riverside complex by Berkeley Homes, an ambitious program which includes construction of nearly 5,000 new homes and the re-birth of the old, Woolwich Arsenal's heritage buildings.
History
Woolwich was established as a Royal Dockyard by Henry VIII in early 1500s. The area flourished in late 1600s and in the 1700s as an important dockyard and the Royal Arsenal location. The decline of Woolwich starts in the second part of the 20th century with the closure of Royal Ordinance factory. The Woolwich ferry dates to the 14th century.
