Poplar area guide London E14

Poplar, E14

Poplar E14, is a large district in East London bordering Canary Wharf to the south, Canning Town to the east and Bow, Mile End and Stepney to the north and west. The River Lea forms a boundary between Poplar and Canning Town, while the Limehouse Cut canal separates this area from the neighbouring Mile End and Limehouse. Poplar stretches all the way to the Thames via Blackwall and East India Dock basin. The name Poplar comes from a large and distinctive ‘black poplar’ tree that used to flourish in the area.

The progress of Poplar is linked to the opening of the West India Docks in 1802, which soon attracted new housing developments for an increased, multi-ethnic workforce servicing London’s shipping industry in Blackwall.  ‘The village of Blackwall has records of shipbuilding from as early as the Middle Ages and Poplar High Street would have acted as a route for passengers travelling to the City. ‘By the late 19th century, the district was well known for overcrowding and poverty. Many council-built flats and houses date from the 1950s to the 1970s, and Lansbury Estate is one of the most prominent Poplar housing projects from that era. The 124-acre estate was ‘an architectural vision of community living, designed as part of the Festival of Britain’.

The concrete brutalist blocks forming the estate have been replaced and the area transformed by contemporary, new home developments within Poplar Business Park and Blackwall Reach redevelopments. The wider area is being ‘gentrified’ steadily too with more modern housing neighbourhoods added along the Limehouse Cut Canal, nearby Blackwall DLR station and along the River Lea.

The most vibrant Poplar district is formed around the famous Chrisp Street Market, which is the UK’s oldest purpose-built market still retaining a strong sense of community, excellent art scene and a range of groovy restaurants.

There are several housing development sites with considerable infrastructure and growth in the South Poplar area which is bordering Canary Wharf and includes Aspen Way, Billingsgate Market and North Quay.  With the progress of Crossrail and the construction of Crossrail Place, the area has become attractive to a wide range of residential, retail, employment, community and cultural projects. This new district with direct links to Canary Wharf will be shaped in accordance with the South Poplar Master Plan adopted in July 2021.
