CHELSEA
Exclusive and glamorous, cosmopolitan and laid-back, Chelsea is a super prime district in South West London. Set along the Thames to the south, Chelsea borders Fulham to the west and Kensington and Knightsbridge to the north & east. It covers land and properties with postcodes SW3 & SW10.
In the 16th century Chelsea was knows as a ‘Village of palaces’. St Thomas Moore, the Duke of Norfolk, the Earl of Shrewsbury and Henry VIII all had country houses in the area. Up until mid-19th century, the land was occupied by farms of vegetable and flower growers. Property developers started building in Chelsea after the King’s Road, the districts’ main road, was made public in 1830. Originally it was King Charles II’s private passage from St James’s Palace to Fulham. Its famous residents were ceramic producers, painters (Whistler, Rosetti) writers (Swift, Addison, Carlyle, Kristie, Tolkien, Wilde), other creatives and bohemians. In the 20th century Chelsea was a one of ‘Swinging 60s’ locations, home to Viviane Westwood and to Mary Quant’s Bazar store on King’s Road.
King’s Road is still the districts’ main shopping thoroughfare extending from Sloane Square almost to Stamford Bridge. The road is lined with the best independent and high street brand shops and showcases the latest in fashion, art, antiquities and design.
Georgian and Victorian properties dominate Chelsea’s landscape. There are large pastel-coloured terraces overlooking lush garden squares, quaint mews houses and cottages, large red brick mansions and a good mix of contemporary apartment block developments. Chelsea attracts families, young professionals and blue-chip companies, mostly from Europe and the USA.
Cadogan Estate is the largest landlord in Chelsea spanning 93 acres of prime residential land with over 1,000 flats and houses, 500,000 sq.ft. of office space and over 300 shops. Currently, the Estate is modernising and upgrading 1 Sloane Gardens, a commercial site adjacent to Sloane Square Underground station.
